Sunday, February 27

2:00 p.m.           Advocacy 101

Learn what advocacy means, ways to effectively advocate, and how to influence the policy-making process to get results. 

3:00 p.m.           2022 SBA Legislative Priorities and Formulating “The Ask”

Get an overview of current federal legislation in the works on Capitol Hill and dig deeper into the pieces of legislation that SBA is focused on advancing this year. We will also demo what the conversation between your assigned group and a Capitol Hill staffer will look like.

4:00 p.m.           Meeting Group Breakouts: Prepare for Your Meetings

Participants will gather virtually in “breakout rooms” on Zoom to put together their game plan for conducting their Hill meetings. Each group will have an assigned facilitate to review talking points, provide background on the Members of Congress you’re meeting with, and work with you so that you feel comfortable sharing during those meetings.

5:30 p.m.           Day 1 Wrap Up

We will reconvene virtually as a group and give you a chance to let us know if there are still any lingering questions or concerns you have that we can address during the rest of the training.


Monday, February 28

1:00 p.m.           Updates on CDC’s Spina Bifida Activities

Join Catharine Riley, PhD, MPH, to learn more about the important work of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in addressing issues related to Spina Bifida.

1:45 p.m.           Meeting Logistics and Awards

We will cover final details about your meetings, make sure you have your schedule and Zoom links, and give out some awards to some of our advocacy champions.

2:30 p.m.           Break
4:00 p.m.           Young Adult Advocacy Chat

If you are a young adult age 16 to 25, you won’t want to miss this session. Join some of our young adult advocacy leaders to learn about how you can be an effective advocate for change, build teams of like-minded individuals in your schools and communities, and be the change you want to see in the world. (NOTE: While this session is geared toward young leaders, everyone is welcome to attend.)

7:00 p.m.           Virtual Happy Hour

Grab your favorite drink and snack and hop on Zoom for a casual hour of fun! This is your chance to meet your fellow advocates, make connections, and relax before the big day.

This is the day! You will receive Zoom links and calendar invitations for the meetings you are invited to attend with Members of Congress or their staff representatives. We strongly encourage you to attend all the meetings you asked to join if at all possible. There is power in numbers.
