Born with the most severe type of Spina Bifida, Luca has overcome many obstacles in his three years. Within hours of birth he was rushed into emergency surgery to repair his open lesion. The following day, he need another life-saving surgery to prevent fluid building up in his brain. From the tiny baby that doctors told us wouldn't survive to the energetic toddler he is now, Luca began defying all the odds the minute he came into this world.

Russell, Lillian, and I walk proudly with Luca wheeling at our side. We walk for him for many reasons other than the obvious one that he is our son and brother. We want to raise awareness that being diagnosed with Spina Bifida is not a death sentence. Spina Bifida is just a part of him but not all of him. We walk because we want the future of this medical complexity to be brighter for him. We walk because by the time he is an adult we want to be able to roll into an adult Spina Bifida clinic without having to travel thousands of miles.

One in 2,858 will be born with Spina Bifida or another neural tube defect, making Spina Bifida the most commonly occurring birth defect in this country. The total average lifetime health costs for an infant born with Spina Bifida can exceed $1,000,000. Even though an estimated 60% of people living with Spina Bifida are adults yet there are only 10 adult clinics across the U.S. Can you imagine having to travel out of state or across the country to get medical care?

I am determined to help the SBA eliminate these challenges and create a brighter tomorrow for the 177,000 Americans living with Spina Bifida. Please donate today to help make a difference for this underserved community.

Join me in supporting the 177,000 Americans that bravely cope with this challenging birth defect on a daily basis. All donations are 100% tax deductible and will help me reach my goal. Donations can be made here, on my personal webpage or via check made out to the Spina Bifida Association and mailed to me (made out to the SBA). If you’re unable to make a donation at this time, join me for the walk and register today.
