I am running my first marathon in New York City on November 4 in honor of my nephew, Liam Vito Milnes, and to raise money for the Spina Bifida Association. Liam surprised us all, arriving 8 weeks early on August 12. He was born with Spina Bifida, requiring surgery immediately after birth. My twin sister and her husband, Liam’s parents, are thrilled he is here and are so grateful for the incredible and dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff at Boston Children’s Hospital, its Spina Bifida and Spinal Cords Conditions Center, and those who they have already met in the Spina Bifida community. With the caring, loving, and attentive support of Boston Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurses, Liam is already thriving, eating more each day, putting on weight, reaching his unique milestones, and wowing his mommy and daddy.
I know that my nephew’s journey has only just begun and that many families manage and overcome the unique obstacles that Spina Bifida poses every day for their children and family members. As we support Liam down his unique path and seek support from medical professionals, friends, and family, I run this marathon with gratitude and acknowledgement of children born with Spina Bifida who have blazed a path forward for others, like my nephew, and offer a source of inspiration and strength for all children with Spina Bifida aspiring to a healthy and successful life. My run seeks to honor their courage and inspire some for my own family, especially for my best friend and Liam's mom, my twin sister Desiree.
Thank you for visiting my page! My family thanks you for your support!!! #TeamLiam2018
