This will be the third Walk n Roll for team Spinal Samurai. I am so grateful for my family and friends who continue to support and encourage me. Taking part in this amazing event last year, was a milestone that I was so happy to share with those around me. And now I have the opportunity to once again join the Spina Bifida community and to be inspired.
Inspired... to grow, give back, be educated and in turn share that knowledge. I have seen unconditional support, love, and most importantly acceptance at each of these events.
"Spina Bifida is a complex birth defect that affects infants, toddlers, kids, teenagers, and adults. The Spina Bifida Association (SBA) is on a mission of improving the quality of life of all those affected by raising funds and awareness."
The Walk n Roll has given me the opportunity and encouragement to push my limits and push "Beyond all Limits." It has been a slow process and everyday poses its own complications, but the end goal is the same; to live my life with happiness, hope and to not allow my physical disabilities to dissuade me from surpassing my potential.
"Did you know there are 65 million women at risk of having a baby born with Spina Bifida? Every day, an average of eight babies are born with Spina Bifida or a similar birth defect of the brain and spine. With your help, we can decrease the future occurrence of Spina Bifida and provide direct services to all affected."
As each day passes things get more challenging, but I have learned to not let it take away from who I am, but to allow those difficult moments to make me stronger. That is not an easy feat and there are many days where I would love to hide, get away from everything...to be normal...but then I wouldn't be me. Accepting my chronic pain, the scary numbness in my legs, the uneasy bathroom visits, the constant uncertainty as a woman, and the inability to fully express myself to others is just the stepping stone to becoming a better me.
Joining this community was one of the best decisions I have made, it has opened my eyes to a support system that I need now more than ever. It has brought me a step closer to accepting who I am, what my birth defect means for me, and that my life will be a little more colorful than those around me.
